Who Will Finally End 'Star Wars' Reign on Top of the Box Office?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been dominating the box office since its debut right before Christmas, but it’s finally expected to finally lose its seat on top to another war epic, albeit one firmly grounded in reality.

Sam Mendes’ World War I epic 1917, which just unexpectedly took home the Golden Globe for Best Movie Drama this past weekend.

Based on that win and very strong word-of-mouth from audiences who saw it during its early release, 1917 is expected to debut at number one. Considering it’s essentially a period piece, that is almost unheard of in this day and age.

But Disney shouldn’t feel too bad about falling back to No. 2 with Star Wars, the film has already raked in nearly a billion already worldwide and just under half a billion in the states.
